We're on Facebook now.                                       12/01/2012

Never being ones to shy away from new things, we've decided to put up a facebook page for all of you to access freely. It's going to be a new way for everyone interested to learn about what is going on in the learning centre and a new way for you to participate and let us know how things are going. It's all new and still in the "work in progress" stages but we hope this will help some of you gain a better insight into just what is we are doing. Just click the facebook link above and send a friend request and we will add you.

HAPPY NEW YEAR                                                  03/01/2012

CHRISTMAS TIME                                      02/12/11

Well it's here again, CHRISTMAS TIME, and for those members working within ROYAL MAIL units, it's almost Christmas pressure time.
This update is to cover some of the questions that have been asked by students on the current ECDL class and for anyone wishing to join any classes we are planning soon.

The main question was :-
"Is the centre still opening for the classes during Christmas pressure?"

The answer is "YES!!" we are detirmined that whilst people may be doing overtime during pressure, they don't miss out on the support they require for the completion of their courses. To this end the centre will open at the same times. If you want to come in and revise for the first of the ECDL tests, then I would reccomend you do so as the test will be during January. So it's not too far away.
If you can't make it on the normal class day we can offer remote support via the learning centre website here, email for both myself and the tutors, and of course if you really get stuck you can call.

So what else is going on during the pressure period? We'll be having a major re-jig of the centres layout, as we're expecting some new equipment soon. We're also putting the finishing touches to several of the new "INFORMAL LEARNING" projects that will be avaiable in the early part of the new year.

We are also on the verge of being able to offer a DYSLEXIA screening service to members too. So if you feel that this could be something that would benefit you or at least put your mind at ease, get in touch. We can make an appointment. Whist the service we offer is not a diagnosis, it is a very good indicator. The assessments use a computer based system and it's about 30 minutes in length to complete. The results are of course confidential.

Lots going on and even more to come for 2012. So make now the time you think about using your learning centre, gain skills and knwledge and better yourself with the full qualification courses we are able to provide, in ADULT LITERACY, NUMERACY, IT and LANGUAGES.

ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES                                                                            25/11/2011

As part if a local communities project, we have been offered limited spaces on an ESOL course. This is a real opportunity for members who have ENGLISH as a second or third Language. At the moment places are limited to 15. I'm sure however if we have more than this interested there will be room for negotiation for those places.
What does ESOL offer you?
This course will increase your skills with ENGLISH including spoken and written ENGLISH.

So if you feel this will help you and you want to improve your ENGLISH skills NOW is the time to do it. This course would usually cost around £180 per person. However, the places we have available are FREE!!!!!!! REGISTER YOUR INTEREST NOW TO AVOID MISSING OUT ON THIS.

There are some guidelines to taking this class but I'm certain they can be met for anyone interested.

You need to act soon this is a very limited offer, so make the most of it now!!!

ECDL UPDATE                                                                          24/10/2011

Well as many will be aware, the ECDL level 2 course is in its' second week. It's been well received and the 0800 and 1100 classes are well attended. We have had issues with the 1500 class, and this is in part due to the mail centre review and new duty re-sign. So due to peoples changes in circumstances it was felt that the 1500 class at this time was not viable to run. We will look again at the possibilty of running the class again at a later date.

More Informal learning Workshops.

With the success of the basic IT workshops we ran during the early part of the year and the Summer. It's felt that with the interest still being shown in these, that we should run them again. Also we are looking into the possibility of running more workshops covering a wider range of possible subjects. I am in fact looking into a creative writing workshop and the Digital Photography whilst delayed <printer issues> will definitely go ahead. However we will run it more along the lines of a photography society with contests etc and themed displays. Should be fun.

ADULT LITERACY/NUMERACY

Having had enquiries on more adult literacy and numeracy classes I am now looking at several new classes covering basic numeracy and literacy and possibly running the "GET ON WITH IT" course that proved popular before, as this course provides a bit of computer experience along with either literacy or numeracy for the people taking part. So it is still all systems go.
As always if you have any ideas or are interested in working with us to bring more classes to people then get in touch.

ECDL COURSE HAS BEGUN                                                           07/10/2011

I just wanted to thank the people that turned up for the enrolment of the new computer course. The first two classes were close to being full and are secure in their ability to continue.
There may be room on the last class to squeeze a couple more onto the course. so if you are still interested, get in touchNOW and secure your place.

The price of the individual module exams, and the final exam has unfortunately risen by 10 pounds to £80. I know it is a bit higher than both I and the college had expected but seeing as the course as well would cost £375 we are still getting a bargain here.

COURSE UPDATES                                                   18/07/2011

Hi everyone, sorry for the lack of updates to the site. I have had to collate the results from the ECDL event with the college. I have also been on leave for a week, but am back now.

So the results for the learning centre awareness event are in and it's been a fantastic response. we had almost 50 people express an interest in the ECDL course and who the college thought were very able to do so. So I am currently talking to the college about when we can get this course going.
Another result has show that there is a need to run the "BEGINNERS IT" workshops again. We were looking at running them again but with a majority of those taking the course being retired members. However with the results from the learning event there are a great deal of people still in need of this informal learning workshop.

Another update is the arrival of our new printer....Yes we have a nice shiney A3+ wireless printer. It means no more cueing for the printer when doing a course. More importantly is the fact that it is the last piece of the puzzle for us to run the Digital Photography workshops. So we are looking at running them during august for 12 weeks.

There will be further announcements on other courses being made available quite soon I hope too so stay tuned.

EUROPEAN COMPUTERS DRIVERS LICENCE ASSESSMENTS                                                                                               09/06/11

After what seems like a long time waiting, mainly because it has been. I can announce confirmation of the advanced IT assessments for the level 2 ECDL course.

THE DATE FOR THE ASSESSMENT IS

JUNE 30th 2011. From 1300-2200

At the Leicester Mail centre. Later dates for assessments at Delivery offices to be confirmed.

So for those that are interested in taking this valuable course, come and be assessed on the day by a representative from North Warwickshire and Hinckley college. Whilst there is a small fee to pay to take this course I cannot stress how valuable this opportunity is for everyone interested in pushing their computer knowledge. So keep an eye on your notice boards for further information.

If the ECDL course on offer isn't what you are looking for or you may just want something to start you off learning about a computer or anything else. Please come and see us on the day. We can discuss, plan and advise you on what is on offer both via the learning centre and what is on offer online for a flexible learning approach to suit your shift patterns and family commitments.

BIG CHANGES TO MY-GUIDE.                      26/05/11

My guide is going through some major changes, funding for this website that offers free online basic courses for using computers etc, ceases in September. There are however things in place to replace the old website. GO ON is the new remodelled version. It's being piloted at 75 other centres around the country and will be far more interactive and easy to use than the old site. The site goes "live" in July, so if you're using MY-GUIDE remember to make the switch in JULY. Your learning centre will still be working as an Online centre so we can help support your learning journey.

GET READY FOR SUMMER                                      16/05/11

Well as the current IT workshops continue, it's time to look at the new and forthcoming courses and workshops, for those of you interested in learning.
There will be a chance for anyone interested to talk directly to myself and a college representative in the near future about full qualification courses, the duration of them and the costs incurred by them. Then we can also look forward to the short 12 week Photography workshop, another run of the beginners IT workshops for people just getting to grips with the computer.

So if your interested in joining classes, gaining useful qualifications for YOUR FUTURE, then get in touch. I'm still working with two colleges to finalise dates but we can look at JUNE/JULY for a series of events based about learning what you need and how we can help you get you going on your learning journey.

GETTING THE MOST FROM OLD COMPUTERS

A P.C. is and expensive purchase for anyone to make, and add to that the constant battle of trying to keep everything up to date with the latest Operating System, and software that actually does what you want it to. With the current financial situation most of us are in, it's getting more and more difficult for anyone to justify buying a new PC or serious upgrades on existing ones.
Well I have been looking at running a series of workshops dealing with just this. Looking at free alternatives to WINDOWS as an operating system, and that are aimed at extending the useful lifespans of your computer. Also looking at free software alternatives to MS OFFICE and the likes of MS WORD, MS EXCEL, POWERPOINT. Then for those interested in editing their pictures, we'll look at alternatives to PHOTOSHOP, COREL DRAW, and for those involved in the community they live, we'll look at alternatives to desktop publishing software that cost the earth.
I myself restored an old computer to life, running free software to get an ageing machine back to running quickly so that it connects to the internet, receives/send emails and edit, produce documents/letters, spreadsheets without having to spend a fortune. The only outlay was £25 for some newer memory and a DVD writer. So as you can see it doesn't have to cost the earth to restore a computer that would have previously been taken to the tip back to usefulness.
The best thing about it is, apart from nearly everything being free, it was fairly easy to do too. So if you've got an old computer that you don't think can be used again, think again and then sign up for the workshops to learn more.

GETTING BACK TO BASICS                               27/04/11

Well in another couple of weeks Adult Learners week will be here, and it could be time to think about getting back to basics. If you want to improve your reading, writing or want to improve your maths skills. Then now may be the time to do just that. I myself am thinking it could be time to get back to basics and tackling my maths skills...Or how poor they have gotten over the years. I think we all forget just how important good literacy and numeracy skills are, and how not using them can slow us down. So to that end I am looking at running several Literacy and Numeracy classes in the learning centre in the near future. As usual please get in touch to participate.

FILLING THE GAPS                                                                   07/04/11

With the prospect of more advanced IT classes starting around August this year, there may be a need to bridge the gaps between peoples current skills and those required to get on the ADVANCED IT courses. There will be a round of IT assessments for those interested in progressing from having done "GET ON WITH I.T." "MS WORD LEVEL 1" and the "INTERMEDIATE I.T. WORKSHOPS" to the ECDL level 2.
If you're keen to join the more advanced classes, then get in contact, and if you're starting out we have workshops and computer classes and workshops suited for you too.

ADULT LEARNERS WEEK                    07/04/11

Adult learners week is here again, and we as a branch are hoping that you as members will seek the chance to be a part of it. Whether you're simply interested in learning to surf the internet and check your emails, want to brush up on your literacy and numeracy skills or want to see just what is open to you via Adult learning. Then let us know. We are keen to
get as many people using the Learning centre, gaining qualifications, or learning something                                                                    they never thought was possible for them, before. Now is as good a time as any to join in                                                                        and enter Lifelong Learning and making it part of Adult learners week makes it even easier                                                                    to join in.

NEW BASIC I.T. WORKSHOPS                          01/04/2011

After another successful run of the Informal IT workshop I can announce we are looking to run this again in the very near future.

So if you're interested in learning how your computer ticks and want to use it without worrying that you'll press the wrong thing. Then call, email, or register your interest on this very website clicking here and filling in the form.

So here's to seeing you soon on the new workshops.

NEW PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP        01/04/2011

With the fact that almost everyone now owns a digital camera in one shape or another, you could have a flashy digital SLR camera with interchangeable lenses, or a compact...Even mobile phones have half decent cameras these days. So if you want to learn how to get the best out of what you've got, how to take better pictures, how to frame a shot, how lighting makes such an impact on your pictures, using on and off camera flash and how we can edit and alter our pictures after the fact to make them more to our tastes.
This may be the workshop for you. So if this is of interest let us know by calling, emailing or clicking here and completing the interest form to let us know.

There will be a small cost for this workshop, to cover paper and ink costs.

BOOK SWAP UPDATE.                               24/03/11

Well the response to this has been good, we all ready have promises of a great deal of books to be donated to the "BOOK SWAP" and we will see just how many we get in the next few weeks.

I have been asked however, to explain just what it's about.
Q1: WHO IS IT FOR?
A1: EVERYONE.
Q2: HOW DOES IT WORK?
A2: YOU TAKE A BOOK READ IT AND THEN RETURN IT, HOPEFULLY YOU'LL BRING ANOTHER BOOK WITH YOU FOR THE "BOOK SWAP" TO USE AS WELL, BUT IT'S NOT MANDATORY
Q3: HOW LONG DO I GET TO READ THE BOOK?
A3: AS LONG AS IT TAKES?
Q4: WHAT TYPE OF BOOKS WILL BE THERE?
A4: ALL SORTS, FICTION, NON FICTION,  ETC. WHATEVER PEOPLE DONATE.

ADULT LITERACY                                                                                17/03/11

I have been recently talking to several providers over the possibility of Adult literacy courses being provided via the learning centre, and as such the talks have progressed well and hopefully will have news on these in short order. I am quite keen to get this back on the agenda as I feel it's a good idea to brush up our literacy at any age.

MORE I.T. COURSES SOON!!                                           3/3/2011

As many of you know, especially those currently involved in work place learning. I am trying to source more IT courses. I am currently talking with a college about such courses, they have told me they can provide some, but will unfortunately have to charge a fee. Now whilst I would love to be able to provide all the courses running in the centre for free I am unable to. Simply due to the reduction in funding available to the colleges locally to provide such.
The cost of such "full cost" courses are £50 for a course with a college certificate at the end of it. I'm asking for more information on these as they are governed by numbers attending the classes. If we have enough interest we can run them. I myself will be looking at one of these, as I feel it would prove a valuable aid to anyone interested in going onto the ECDL level 2 course which I'm hoping to run in August this year.
If you're keen to learn more about this and anything else that is running via the learning centre, or via the centre as a UKONLINE centre, please call or mail for more details.

The more people we have using the centre, the more it will become possible to hold a wider variety of courses for you as members.

MYGUIDE changes                                            24/02/11
Myguide.net has undergone a few changes, which include newer courses and unfortunately the removal of the email service. Myguide is a really great way to get to grips with computer skills and lots more, so click the image below and register now and get learning. Remember when it asks for a centre ID ours is. Click on the "myGuide" picture below and the website will open in a new window so you can refer back to the centre ID when you need to :-)

ECDL level 2 courses                                       24/02/11

Well I have some good news and some bad news for those of us waiting for the ECDL level 2 courses. The college have now confirmed that they can indeed supply these for us, but that the course and work would need to be completed by the 31st of July 2011 with each student having a minimum of 102 hours study. With it now almost March, I feel that even if people could commit to more than one lesson a week we would be struggling to provide enough sessions to have everyone complete and receive the support the require to pass. The next window to hold the course would be from August 1st 2011. Now whilst it seems ages away it will give me time to put things in motion and hopefully hold other courses to better prepare people to take the ECDL 2 qualification courses.
To confirm you are ready to begin the ECDL course, there would be a session of IT assessments, this is simply to enable us to know where you are and the level people are operating at. After all the ECDL course is quite a tough one. I am in talks with the college on how best to hold these assessments so we can reach all functions and shifts too. But I will be keeping people updated.

It's taken a very long time to get this far, but we can see some light at the end of the tunnel

INFORMAL WORKSHOPS                     24/02/11

Well as the informal workshops enter their 7th week, I can report that they have again proven popular and informative to yourselves as members. The workshops are driven by your needs, and it has become apparent that whilst the content is being well received the feedback is providing valuable information for we as a branch to improve the experience further. One area that has been highlighted is a possible need for improved literacy, as such I am in talks with the college to run the "Get on with I.T." course that concentrates on adult literacy and building on your skills using the computer. This course proved very valuable the last 3 times we ran it and hopefully it will be as valuable again f we gain enough interest and funding to hold it. If not then the workshops will run again soon.

SPANISH LANGUAGE CLASS NEWS                                                                            09/02/2011

It is with sadness that I have to inform you that the newest run of this class the 1100-1300 class. Will unfortunately cease as of today.
After consulting with the tutor about the reduction in numbers over the first month of the course, it was felt that to carry on would be not be fair on the students still attending and the tutor. I and the tutor will re-visit the possibility of another class in the near future.

The 1530-1730 Friday afternoon class, still carries on as normal.

VR's and EVR's

If you are a member of the CWU who has chosen to take the recent Voluntary redundancy and Early Voluntary Retirement packages that Royal Mail have offered, and are unsure about your future direction. Then PLEASE remember that you have access to professional advice via the CWU and their trained representatives. If you are wondering just what is out there for you training or education wise? Then we are here to offer you Information Advice and Guidance that is free from bias.

NEW YEAR NEW LOOK                                                 07/01/2011

Well with the new year here, it was time to take the old site design and revamp it. So we have a new layout, new logo and header design, and now new sign up forms to make things easier to stay in touch and let us know what it is you want to do. As always feedback to us is very important and it lets us know we are doing it right. So if you're visiting looking around or signing up let us know what you think to the new site layout.

CWU LEICESTERSHIRE LEARNING CENTRE WINS MAJOR AWARD                                                                      06/01/2011

Picture
Mark Greenhill accepts award on behalf of the branch.

On the evening of November 25th 2010, the CWU Leicestershire branch received the Cross College award for business Innovation. Mark Greenhill Branch Secretary <pictured left> was there to receive the award on behalf of the Learning centre, from Simon Bartley CEO of UK skills <pictured right>. This is quite an accolade for the learning centre, but this is not an award made simply to the Branch but it's an award to all those that have used the centre and made everything possible. So thanks for those that have begun the journey into learning with us and to those thinking about it....Come on in the waters fine

HELP WITH MYGUIDE REGISTRATIONS                                         04/01/2011

I have had a few emails and calls concerning signing up to myguide. As you may be aware Myguide is a website full of free online courses aimed at those wanting to get to grips with their computer and the internet. With that in mind and some people getting lost in how to sign up to the website I have created a video that will hopefully be easy to follow and walk you through the process. Now Myguide may not be for  everyone but it really is a great aid and you can sign family and friends up to it too as it's open to all. Just remember to include the Learning centre ID 3451267 when asked to input it, and also to let them know how you heard about this by selecting "trade Union." It's all in the video.

HAPPY NEW YEAR                                  03/01/2011

Well here's the new year, and we will be having new year changes with the learning centre and the website shortly. I just want to convey the branches thanks to those of you that are using the centre and those that are going to be suing it in the future.
Those that have all ready taken part on both informal workshops, and vocational qualification courses have experienced the positive experience of using the CWU learning centre. 2011 is a new year, and maybe some of you out there that have visited the centre but thought what is on offer may not be for them, I just want to say that 2011 is going to be bringing some really interesting things into the centre. Amongst these will be:-

New IT courses and workshops. These will include refresher workshops covering MS word and Excel for those wishing to perhaps look at the European Computers Drivers license level2 qualification.

Continuing Language Classes and New ones. We all ready have a Spanish language class about to start its 3rd year of study, and a fresh class is about to begin. So if you're interested in broadening your horizons and want to embark on a Spanish class get in touch.

Digital Photography and PhotoShop workshops. We all ready have plans to run two new informal workshops in the first quarter of 2011. The IT for beginners, and now I can confirm that we are going to run a BEGINNERS PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP. This will be followed shortly after by a short series of workshops dealing with PhotoShop and other photographic software. Whilst we wish that we as a branch could provide this free of charge, we cannot, but any and all fees will be used to cover materials such as photographic paper and inks for the prints you'll be taking home at the end of the 12 week workshop.

So if anything like this catches you eye. Then now is the time to act. We are always limited in the sizes of the classes. The learning centre and what it provides you as members is driven by your needs. So if you have an idea for a course or workshop drop us a line or give us a call, and we will do our best to see if it can be made possible.

As usual anyone interested in using the centre can make use of the free Information Advicee and Guidance service offered by the union to members, this is to enable you to make the right choice of course or workshop best suited to you. For an idea on what advice and guidacne is about click here

NEW SPANISH CLASS          13/12/10

There are still spaces available for this class, so if you want to "aprenda hablar español" or "learn to speak spanish" get in touch.

This course is a self funded one but we have a very reasonable arrangement with our local tutor.

COMPUTERS FOR THE NERVOUS, take 2                                            19/11/10

After reviewing the feedback from the first informal learning workshop we as a branch can now confirm that we will be running them again in the new year. The workshops will see a change to the way we run them too. Instead of 6 weeks they will run for 8 weeks and may stretch to 10 depending on how people attending them need support. These workshops will commence during January.

The workshops will cover a full range of issues when people deal with computers and the internet. But we will this time have a special focus on family security.

The workshops are once again aimed at members with little experience with computers, but we will also be able to cater now for members that have issues in attending the center. We can offer a similar web based course via "myguide" it won't have the same sort of support as the workshops in the learning centre but it will give you a taster as to what we can do in here.

The workshops are open to all members of the CWU in Leicestershire, and retired members too.

If you have any questions as to the workshops please call and find out. There will be limited spaces so please confirm your interest by filling in the course interest form online, or pick one up from the union rooms at Campbell street or the Mail centre.

If you work on deliveries we can cater for you too, and if you have problems with coming in if you are based in a rural delivery office we can still help you get the benefit of the CWU informal learning workshops or your learning centre's ability to provide access to "myguide" learning

INFORMAL LEARNING WORKSHOPS                                                25/10/10

Well the first run of the informal learning project has drawn to an end and the feedback is in from all 6 weeks. I'm happy to say that it has been very well received and that a good many have drawn a lot from them and are confident enough now to join in on more learning. I'm going to sit down with the feed back we have got and when reviewed hope to draw enough from it to tailor another run of them in the near future. But as always your branch is open to suggestions here, so if you have an idea or a need that you feel needs a workshop running then get in touch. One the CWU have looked at is an internet awareness workshop aimed at members with family's. So if you have an idea use the contact address and let us know.

ROOM4LEARNING becomes a Unet online learning centre

In conjunction with the "get online" campaign the CWU Room4learning learning centre has become a Unet centre. It now means members can have access to FREE online courses that they can study at their own pace and still have the support of a CWU Learning rep for the times you need it. The courses range from basic Online skills to using public services and cover a wide range of subjects. If you are interested in accessing this please contact your lead learning Rep.
So if you are interested in participating in this or part of the "first click" campaign, as this is geared to anyone with Internet access but who are still unsure what to do with it or a computer you can join the "MYGUIDE" online resources page, click the link below, and register online. One thing we ask if you do so, is to quote your learning centres ID which is 3451267 and when asked where you heard about all this, select Trade Union. The one really good thing is it isn't simply open to members it is open to their friends and family, so sign them up and get them to do the same.

As many will know we have had confirmation of the start of the latest full course. This time dealing with MSWORD...it begins on Friday the 29th of October and runs through November and December....So if you're doing it it may impact one day of Christmas Pressure for you. With the cut backs this may well be the last time we can run a FREE course for a while. But your branch has in place other methods of learning for you...such as reduced cost courses and informal learning workshops.

If you're interested in the  single module course you need to hurry as it's live on the 29th of October...Email, fill in the online interest form or call to register interest and confirm a place....If the classes are full we will seek to help you learn what you need via informal workshops or other E-Learning opportunities.

Quiet website.

I'd like to apologise for the quietness of the website, this is due to the development of a new website, with the specific aims to allow access to more internet based learning opportunities for members interested in learning but who may have difficulty attending classes or workshops. So hopefully we'll have news soon on the launch.

.

More Informal Workshops                               16/08/10

After the Microsoft ACCESS workshops, and the feedback that has come from those taking them. I can see that there is a need for similar workshops in the future.
I am in the process now of creating a "computers for everyone" workshop.
This will cover all the basics people would like to have more understanding in. Such as setting up an email account, how to attach things to emails so we can share holiday snaps and the like with friends and family. It will also cover how to keep things safe whislt online, and the importance of online security. It will also cover a basic section on using Word too. Hopefully it'll prove an introduction that people feel they need, and perhaps lead to taking one of the new IT courses we will have available soon. The workshops should run for around 6 -8 weeks again.

So if this is of interest to you, give me a call and let me know and I'll put your name down.

Please remember the places are limited to 12 on each workshop.  But if the numbers are good again, I will see about running them again.

We are also looking into the possibility of running more workshops covering more things in the future. So if you want to learn how to use that confusing box in the corner of the room get dialling now.

POSSIBLE NEW COURSES SOON                                               09/08/10

IT COURSES

With the interest generated from the IT assessments, I can confirm that the college and I are now looking at creating classes.

The other news about the IT courses is that the non exam based single module courses such as WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT and USING THE INTERNET AND EMAIL, will be able to be provided with no cost involved. Which I must admit is great news.

The other good news, is for those that wished to take the more advanced exam based European Computers Drivers License, at either level 1 or 2. The college have informed me that the only cost here will be the cost of the exam itself. Which after some heated discussion has been agreed at £73. Now it might seem a lot, but seeing as the course otherwise would have cost a minimum of £387 with exam fee on top, we can see that it's quite a bargain.

LANGUAGE COURSES

I have over the last 3 months, been trying to get a SPANISH LANGUAGE course going again for both the late turn shift and the early, night and delivery shifts. The tutor that we have teaching at present is quite happy to start new classes quite soon. But due to her commitments to another college, we may be limited to an 11AM to 1PM class. Whilst there is no external funding available for this language course, the tutor is quite happy to keep costs to a very low level. £5 a lesson of £20 a month. Which I think you'll agree is quite reasonable indeed. Closer to the time I will arrange a session where those people interested can come and speak with her and myself about the course and what will be expected of them when they take it.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY and PHOTOSHOP

I have been approached, over the last few months, about the possibility of holding a course for digital photography and photoshop. I have spoken to the college about it, and they can create a tailor made course for those that are interested, but I need at least 12 to start the ball rolling. here so this will be added to the curse interest forms. There will be a cost involved, as the printing of the digital pictures will be quite intensive on the printer. I am hoping they can keep costs to below £50 for the 8-12 week course.

E.S.O.L.

For those that have asked before about a course to help their understanding of English, both written and spoken. I am happy to confirm that the college will be able to run something. Once again, due to funding cuts this will include a cost but i have managed to keep things to roughly £60 per person for a good 10 hour course. So if your interested, let me know and get in touch. I can keep the costs down by the amount of people taking the course, and the £60 is based on a course of 12 people, if we get 15 it'll be £50 and so on.

INFORMAL LEARNING WORKSHOPS

As some may be aware, over the last 6 weeks the Union has run a series of informal IT workshops. These workshops have proven quite successful. Whilst they do not carry any formal qualification at the end of it, it does give you a way of learning more about what you want to know. Be it IT or anything else.

So I am looking into running a new series of workshops, aimed at those that want to learn the basics of using a computer, without the stress of an exam at the end of it. Ideally suited for someone that has little or no knowledge of computers. The workshops will give you the knowledge you need to open and email account and use the basic software on your PC's at home.

DONT FOR GET TO CHECK THE NEWS & EVENTS PAGES TO SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING IN
YOUR

LEARNING CENTRE

YOUR UNION WORKING FOR YOU

What is the learning centre?

The learning centre is simply a place for those working within Royal Mail interested in continuing, or returning to learning. In a relaxed and comfortable environment, you can learn a wide range of subjects offered by colleges via the centre.

What will I find there?

As soon as you step through the door of your learning centre, you'll see a welcoming and comfortable environment. Somewhere that you can learn, but in a relaxed way and at your own speed. As you can see from the picture opposite, it's a nice place, and is fully equipped.

So...We've a room...What's on offer for us to learn then?

A whole host of courses, from an introduction to computing, to language courses such as Spanish There are also course available in Literacy and numeracy. Most of what is on offer lead to a fully recognized national qualification. If there's enough interest we'll get you on a course.

Okay then, this intro to computers, what's that all about?

The "get on with I.T." course is a nice effective way of introducing yourself to the confusing world of computers, but not only that, it will help you brush up on essentials like English and Maths skills. Hopefully at the end of the course you'll view the computer in your room as a tool and not something that needs throwing out the window.

Intro to IT

Spanish sounds good, tell me about that then.

The Spanish Language course, is one aimed at people with an enthusiasm for learning the language. It will take you from very basic phrases in the first part of the course. Then as you progress, will lead on to more complex things, such as booking hotel rooms in the later stages. Not only will it give you a better understanding of the language, it will give you an insight in to the culture and the people.
All in all a nice package for you whatever the needs be, whether it be you on holiday or just a need to broaden your horizons
.

Spanish course

I see the room is based at the local Royal Mail Delivery office...So it's only for delivery staff then?

On the contrary. This Learning centre is for everyone within Royal Mail, not only staff at the main delivery office but the Mail centre and every other delivery office in Leicestershire
If you can make the dates and times of the courses and there are spaces available you've got the chance of learning. Most courses are in the after noon and the centre can only be opened until 6;30 pm. But if you can make the effort to get there we'll make the effort to get you on a course that suits you.

What about having one at the mail centre then?

Unfortunately, at present we only have the facilities at the Campbell Street site. But your branch is working towards expanding that in the near future. If we can prove there's a need for learning in the workplace, then we can try and get more for you as our members. It's you as members ultimately that will be able to drive forward any progress we make here in the future.

So it's just Spanish and I.T. then?

At the current moment in time those are two of the courses running. But those are just two of the courses available you at your learning centre
Others include :-
ITQ courses

Informal learning workshops <learning in your own time and at your own pace, that whilst in itself will not provide a qualification will give you practical skills you can then apply to courses that do carry such a qualification where applicable>

WHAT'S THIS INFORMATION ADVICE AND GUIDANCE THEN? SOUNDS COMPLICATED?
